[GDC 2015] Redux Ark is a great looking space survival game coming to Android next year

Written by AndrewH

The Game Developer’s Conference (GDC for brief) is a superb event to go to to be able to see games that are heading our means by both near future as well as projects currently being done that won’t be coming out for awhile. Redux Ark by Hyper Games falls into the latter category as it is still in early development.

Even though Redux Ark is in early development, the game looks quite good. Farmville is all about surviving on a new hostile world with no, there aren’t any zombies within this survival game. Redux Ark happens in the future, the entire year being 2239, these types of the final bee on Earth dying in 2039 an extremely devastating and fatal chain of events has happened. Just the rich were able to evacuate Earth and eventually, after going swimming in space for awhile, they discovered Earth’s twin planet that was named Gemina.

Now that life on the planet is gone aside from the wealthy, an effort to repopulate Earth with live is made from the building of Redux Ark, a spaceship that will travel to Gemina in order to collect animals, vegetation, along with other organic matter before bringing it back to Earth in order to make an effort to repopulate the planet with life. Unfortunately, when the ship and its crew reached Gemina, they lost control and crashed onto the planet with only three people surviving – a Scientist, a Pathfinder, and a Soldier. Areas of the ship scattered across the planet when the ship crashed and these parts are necessary to obtain the ship back into working order.

Your goal would be to not just collect animals, plant life and the organic matter that you originally found Gemina to collect, but also to discover the parts of the ship which were scattered around whenever you crashed to get back to Earth if humanity has any chance of survival. You’ll be controlling among the three characters that survived at any time, searching the region around you for the things you need as well as the ship parts. Sometimes you’ll have to defend yourself against Gemina’s native creatures and hostile plant life, while other times you’ll be bringing back those who work in order to breed them.

Even though Gemina is Earth’s twin planet the atmosphere is different. Players will have to sustain a constant quantity of electricity to be able to power a device that allows you to breath while outside on the planet’s surface. Additional features within this game also require power and as your supply starts to drop, you will lose the functionality of these features such as the mini map and night light. If you run out of power you will have to go back to the ship in order to recharge your supply. Neglecting to do so will result in you eventually dying. Every time you return to your ship, your game progress can also be saved. You’ll be able to construct charging stations which you can use in order to travel farther away from your ship without dying.

Each class of character has their very own set of unique abilities (and weaknesses) you will need to utilize if you plan to be successful. You will only be able to switch between each character when you are back at the ship, so you’ll need to plan your travels ahead of time. The solider is of course the best fighter from the three, the pathfinder is much better at locating specific creatures, and the scientist knows much more about plants, medicine, and the more scientific stuff.

Gameplay is fairly straightforward. You will be able to tap on the screen to create your character move to that location. You have a limited amount of inventory space open to use so you will need to plan on what you want to consider to the ship every time you travel out and you’ll have to memorize in which the merchandise is that you simply left behind. Attacking is done by tapping on the creature in order to shoot it. Visually, the game is rendered with 3D visuals in a rather nice art style too. Despite the fact that our hands-on was by having an early alpha build of the game, it was quite attractive and fun to play even just in the limited capacity that we had.

Redux Ark is still in the early stages of development and Hyper Games told us that they are likely to release the game sometime in 2016. Whether it gets finished before that, we ought to see it released onto Google Play this season. Check out some official prototype gameplay in the video below. We’ll post updates about Redux Ark as more facts are released in the future. Not sure on pricing by yet.
