[GDC 2015] Hands-on with NetherRealms’ upcoming Mortal Kombat X for Android

Written by AndrewH

One of the games we were very wanting to check out during GDC 2015 was NetherRealms’ Mortal Kombat X for Android devices. Whenever we got to in which the game was being shown, it was in a nice dark conference room nowadays with both console version as well as the mobile version being available to play. Without wasting any time we went over to the table where all of the tablets were, sat down, and began playing Mortal Kombat X while speaking with among the developers working on the work.

The very first thing I notice when choosing up the closest Android tablet to play Mortal Kombat X was how good it looked. Visually farmville is probably one of the best games we view on Android and that’s saying a great deal considering there are several pretty stunning games available. The first screen offers players the choice to pick which game mode they would like to play in, whether that be playing against other people or progressing through the single-player campaign. This is where you will be doing your character selection and team development.

Wile there have been merely a small number of characters open to try, when the game launches you will see a pretty full roster available. Each character might have three different ‘ranks’ or titles. These depict how your character will appear, since there are variations of costumes available, in addition to what special moves they’re going to have access to. Also, depending on the rank of the character, you might or may not have use of certain moves such as the beautiful X-Ray combos.

Speaking of the X-Ray combos, Mortal Kombat X has all of the gore the other versions of the game include. Whether it be shoving a knife through your opponents neck within an X-Ray combo before twisting it and pulling it of said neck in the side, or else you are doing one of the numerous Fatalities hanging around, there’s blood and body parts galore. I’ve even had the pleasure of already visiting a brain sliced in half as one Fatality move essentially cuts someone’s face off. Fun times I assure you.

There will be plenty of known characters in Mortal Kombat X. Raiden was mentioned within the initial press release and I could play as Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Reptile and Kitana while molesting my copy of the game. This is where the free-to-play part of the game will come into play as well. When we first announced farmville, we’d it called a free-to-play TCG brawler and that is basically what it’s. They you create in this game, since there is team combat available where one can switch between characters mid-combat, is made from cards you collect. Each card may have a rank associated with it and based on that rank, your character will have some, or all, of the special moves available.

Card could be collected either by winning them in game through battles as well as purchasing packs with currency you get. If you don’t want to generate the best characters with time you’ll be able to opt into purchasing packs of cards with real cash instead. Completing challenges on other platforms (PC or console) may also net you additional cash to place towards card packs.

Combat is done through a series of taps on the screen as well as three button located near the bottom left of the screen. These buttons are that which you tap to complete your special moves. Tapping your opponent initiates your more standard hits, for example kicks and punches, but these can move into a combo if done well. At that time some of the more minor special moves can be enacted and this is where you is going to be notified that you have to carry out some additional actions. These actions could be tapping random spots that show up on the screen or could be needing to swipe a particular location many times. Get it done fast enough and your damage is increased up to and including certain maximum. This applies to your more bigger special moves that you simply initiate using the aforementioned buttons in your screen.

One thing I had been worried with was that the combat wouldn’t be so good, and the focus from the game would become more on the credit card collecting and never the fighting, which ends up being stiff and no where near what it should be. It has happened in other titles. Thankfully that is not the situation with Mortal Kombat X. After combat, after you have hopefully beaten the crap from your opponent and won, you’ll be able to do your Fatality which follows the same kind of manner in which your personal moves have, except when you are doing the requested actions you are dicing up (or whatever you character’s Fatality might be) your attacker when you are doing them.

If you’re into Faction Wars, there’s some good news for you personally. Mortal Kombat X for mobile does also provide Faction Wars. Although it wasn’t active in the copy of Mortal Kombat X we were having our hands-on time with, recption menus item was there. Faction Wars is essentially where players get together with a lot of other players to be able to try to obtain clan to the top of the leaderboard. So while you contribute to your clan’s ranking when playing laptop computer or console version, you also are able to contribute while using your Android tablet.

There are a couple of features i was unable to take a look at while we used to do our hands-on. For one we didn’t see any of the card related content unfortunately therefore we can’t really expand with that a lot more than we already have. We also couldn’t test out the information that you could unlock when using the console version of the game and vise versa, since the two platforms are intertwined. I do wish we were able to a minimum of see the cards and more of that system to be able to possess a better understand of how hard it will likely be to earn characters and card packs.

As time passes additional characters will be added to the sport in addition to possibly new locations to kill people at. There’s one concern I have after playing Mortal Kombat X and there may not be much that can be done about this. This problem is that when you are in combat, beyond busting the special moves using the buttons, the combat seems a bit repetitive. Your basic hits leading into combos are just tapping on your enemy. Evidently this stop when you’re inspired to perform some from the additional swiping motions to enhance damage. Of course this is based off of the short time I had been playing the sport also it might actually not end up being a problem at all.

However, the sport continues to be very impressive, especially with the visuals (using the gore) and also the animation. It’s fast-paced fighting and if you are curious about controller support, there’s none. How the fighting is to establish, there really is no requirement for a controller. Overall, I walked away from Mortal Kombat X enjoying it however the real review will come whenever we can play it for a long period of your time. If you played Injustice then you will feel pretty comfortable quickly the jump with Mortal Kombat X.

For those of you wondering available to get a copy of Mortal Kombat X, the sport is slated for release around the same time as the PC/console version, which is coming April 24th, 2015. We will post an update if this hits Google Play obviously.
